Linux Chix0r

I've converted to the dark side! I'm officially what the title says.

I've always wanted to try linux, but it was not practical. School work demanded Microsoft office tools and I still rely on Photoshop for photoediting. I have an old desktop in my room, so I decided to put it to good use by installing Ubuntu Dapper Drake on it.

It's been a month now and I absolutely love it! As I started loading applications, I realized how many linux apps I've actually preferred and used on Windows. Such apps include:

1) Firefox -- of course... although flash has some problems with sound.
2) Gaim -- *love*
3) XMMS -- winamp-like media player
4) MPlayer -- all-powerful video player! *bows to it*
5) Terminal -- transparency! That's all I need to say.

There are a few things I am disappointed.

1) I can not totally rely on linux at school because of the need for Word, Excel, etc,
2) I've heard many good things about GIMP, but in practicality, I find it extremely difficult to use and of course it doesn't support my lovely brushes. Perhaps I'm too use to Photoshop.
3) Many other good free apps are not available in linux because it's not open source (like Yahoo Widget Engine, Winamp, Immem, etc). Of course that's understandable, but it would be nice to use those.
4) My desktop computer does not support my LCD monitor, so I'm stuck with an old monitor that I swear is destroying my vision.
5) The sound system is weird. I can't input sound... although plugs to go Audacity
6) Installing things manually is hard. configure, make, make install does not work at all... have to install things in packages.
7) Last.FM plugin for XMMS keeps crashing the player... which is why I haven't been updating my music lately.

I spent last week customizing my desktop. I found the Yahoo Widget Engine equivalent in linux: gDesklets. It gave me this amazing little corner music player... but the system keeps crashing after a few hours.

I customized terminal as well (making it transparent) and also changed my username and hostname so that it would show "ay@me" ... hee hee ^_______^

This is the second time I've had this exact spam in my college inbox. The subject heading is different, but the body content is the same.

There have been two major events this summer thus far:

DaVinci Code Quest on Google
Yes, I participated... and got what I wanted: The "cryptex".

It is quite nice. It's really heavy for what it looks, but the letters are of the quality of those cheap alphabet beads that you can string yourself. The password is the same as in the book: grail. Unfortunately it is set to that, so I can't reprogram it and lock secrets inside. It also has a flaw in that you only need to the last two letters to open it -_________-;;. Oh well... it's still a cute object... and Google has to do with it! All hail Google *bows*

The final 5 puzzles were the same as the puzzle part of the 24 games of the first round. There was nothing to look up. Unfortunately, I found out that the prizes only go to the ONE grand prize winner... oh well, it was fun.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but hopefully will do that next weekend. I am highly amused how all these churches are having seminars on how the DaVinci Code is totally wrong XDD.

National Science Olympiad
I volunteered at NSO, and I thought it was a great success. I helped grade Designer Genes and the event went smoothly, other than not being able to get into the room until 10 minutes before the event XD. I hung out at the scoring room afterwards and really learned a lot about the administration of the competition and the stress that comes with it. I had a lot of fun and hopefully the competitors did too ^_______^.

Bonnie Pink
I've been listening to Bonnie Pink all day. My favorite song by her that I haven't heard before is "The Answer". A few days ago I was totally obsessed with her "LOVE IS BUBBLE". Initially I didn't like the song when I first heard it, but totally fell in love after seeing the weird video. It was very Miike-ish, which is kinda scary. The lyrics are very interesting: "Love is bubble, love is trouble", "Money for me, pleasure for you"... hahaha

Yay for my one blog a month! I'm doing really well so far.

Summer is here and I'm actually quite sad. It is nice to have a break from school finally, but there's so many things that I'm not doing anymore.

I will be working all summer. I was actually accepted into an awsome REU program but due to complications, I'm not going... which is really really sad. I'm slowly getting over it. Hopefully I will have more time to work on the website.

The classes this semester has been awsome. The finals went well and since then I've been impatiently waiting for my grades to be posted.

I'm highly amused that the class I thought was most difficult (Honors Organic Lab) I got the highest grade in the class on the final and an A+ as a final grade. I don't suck at H NMR after all! That whole weekend of doing problems and neglecting my other finals apparently paid off XDDD... we'll see how much it paid off to the other classes though...

I made a new layout featuring SNoW. I really like some of these new artists.

I decided to script something to keep track of my favorite music that I want to give a shout to. I wrote a little script with my new session skills that I learned in class. It has a nice interface where you can edit entries and delete them. It resizes images from any link, so I don't even have to save the image and prepare it. Hopefully I will actually use it... and if it's good, I may even make it a download ^____^

I started reading Nana and realized it was in Japanese... go figure! Paradise Kiss anime looks kinda messy. There goes my obsession with anime. At least I can still obsess over Mika Nakashima and Yuna Ito XDDD

Speaking of which, I made a wallpaper of her. It's very simple, but I did some pretty modifications on the "wings"... hee hee

I just finished watching NANA (official site) since I really like the songs in it (Mika Nakashima's "Glamourous Skies", "My Medicine", Yuna Ito's "Endless Story", "Journey"). Unfortunately it launched another wave of anime craze which I hopefully will have the time to afford. I decided to read the manga... since the new anime series is coming out with Anna Tsuchiya (as Nana) and OLIVIA [<3<3] (as Reira).

I knew the style of art looked familiar! It's Ai Yazawa of Paradise Kiss... so I've decided to watch that too XDDD. I actually don't like Tommy February6's "Lonely In Gorgeous". Actually, I've never made myself sit through the whole thing because the intro was that bad >.<. Although I am highly amused that Franz Ferdinand sings the end song!

I. Spring Break
Like all previous spring breaks, it has been filled with waking up at 1pm, doing some web stuff, doing some homework, watching movies, being unmotivated, and somethings just sitting in front of my computer doing nothing. Fun times...
I started Dan Brown's Angels and Demons and so far am liking it more than Da Vinci Code... mostly because of the science. I'm sure the science is obsurd, but personally, I don't know much about dark matter, so it's pretty interesting to me. Same with all the religious stuff... it's interesting and believable because I don't know anything about them.

II. School
School is busy as usual. Classes and grades are still okay... although some classes definitely harder than others. Other stresses are building up, but I'll just have to take them one at a time as they come. Nothing is too bad yet.

III. Jpop
I've been obsessed with Miz for the past few weeks. I've added a whole PV section for her, although she doesn't have many PVs. YUI's new album is pretty good too. I found out a few days ago that Do As Infinity broke up... but Van Tomiko is going solo ;_____;.

IV. Cinnamoroll
My Cinnamoroll obsession is still present. I dedicated my entire desktop to it... including a mac-like dock that has Cinnamoroll pictures as the icons... and they spin when you click them! ... haha

OK, I'm done. There's really nothing exciting going on.

Updates of my life...

I. School
Of course school is the thing ruling my life. I am quite pleased with my classes this semester and for once I didn't drop classes at the beginning of the semester.

Organic Chemistry II
People keep saying this teacher is harder, but I don't think so. I like her style of teaching and the first quiz was super easy. This will be a nice class.

Organic Chemistry Lab, Honors
This is probably my hardest class. I fear the labs because if you break something, you have to pay for it. I'm scared of messing up, but so far the two labs I've done have been pretty successful. The quizzes and lab reports are horrible though. I think the grades are curved at the end, so I think I'll be okay.

Intro. to Software Systems, Honors
Java is hard. We don't program enough in this class, so the labs are very hard and time-consuming. We cover deep concepts that I'm not use to in Python. This is a rather hard class.

Mastering the World Wide Web
I heart this class. It's really fast, but I've learned a lot. In the first week, we installed Apache and set up a server. We are now learning perl and soon will be doing MySQL. We do everything in UNIX, which is awsome cos I finally get to learn more commands! We will do PHP later too and do a large website project. Can't wait!

Sociology 100
This is just to get rid of my last social studies credit, but I kinda like it. It seems very easy and is rather interesting. We read articles on various social topics. I would like more discussion for this class though... oh well.

II. Cinnamoroll
I got a large plush Cinnamoroll for X-mas and has been in love with it since. Lookie:

III. BSG
I've been watching Battlestar Galactica for the past two weeks! It initially was kinda boring and I had it on while working on the computer, but then I got hooked. I've caught up to this season now and will be awaiting this Friday's episode.

IV. Happy Chinese New Year
I keep forgetting it's Chinese New Year. I guess it's because I'm not celebrating it as I would normally do. Oh well...hope everyone had a good time bringing in the new year. I did however go to two events in town. I was unaware there are so many Asians in the community.

One more day of break and it's back to the busy life for me.

I've seen many movies in the last few days and here are my comments about them:

Me and You and Everyone We Know
This movie was neat. It's about life... much like Happiness and Magnolia. I tend to like these films because you can always take something from it.

The Island
Although it received bad reviews, I love this movie because of how much it reminds me of Brave New World! It's a science-based distopia ... that's all I can say... but it has made my favorite films list!

King Kong
It's very long, but kinda pretty. The story itself isn't every deep, but the characters had nice expressions and definitely packed with action.

The Animatrix
I've never seen "The Matrix", but it makes me want to see it now. It's extremely beautiful, yet depressing. The world is very interesting to me because my friend and I have been talking about singularity and the possibility of robots taking over the world.

Tomorrow I will be watching The Majestic and hopefully within the next few weeks I'll get to see Memoirs of a Geisha and The Chronicles of Narnia.

Onward to music, I've been listening to Ayumi Hamasaki's new album (miss)understood, Ashlee Simpson's I am Me, and Maria Mena.

I went to Amazon.com to order books for this semester (which was a headache, but I think it's done now) and then I decided to rate a bunch of things so that it would give me good recommendation. That was pretty fun.

HAPPY HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

So far, I feel nothing. It will be about February or March before it actually dawns on me that it's 2006. As for New Year parties, I just hold my head up and smile. New Year is nothing special other than making a list of unrealistic goals that will not be achieved... just like the year before. Therefore I have no New Years resolutions except by life goals of finding and living in happiness.

My vacation to Orlando, FL was fun. We went to all four Disney parks. Due to the holiday season, the place was extremely crowded, but the weather was rather nice (or at least much warmer). I'll be putting up a gallery once I get the new photo gallery script written.

Magic Kingdom
Saw: parade, Cinderella crowning ceremony, "It's a small world", 3D show with Mickey, Peter Pan ride, evening light parade, and fireworks.
Overall: Magic Kingdom is too general. There wasn't much to do other than watch the two parades. Also, it rained a little during the day, which made it gloomy and inconvenient.

Animal Kingdom
Saw: some animals, parade, 3D show ft. "A Bug's Life", Safari ride, took pictures with Mickey and friends
Overall: This was the worst park due to lack of stuff to do. We have all seen zoos... make this one more special! I did really like the Safari ride though.

Epcot
Saw: communication ride (in the globe), energy ride, simulation of going into the body, walked around countries, agriculture exhibit, light show/fireworks
Overall: I really like Epcot although they stressed a lot on energy conservation and such. I did like the science and high-tech-ness of many of the exhibits. The day however did not go so well. After riding the simulation through the body, I got really sick for half the day because I have terrible motion sickness. Later that night, the kids in our group didn't want to walk, so we took turns babysitting while saving a spot for the fireworks. Although, there was a huge DNA structure in front of the Life Science building, which was exiting... except it's incorrect.

MGM Studios
Saw: Indiana Jones, 3D show ft. the Muppets, Little Mermaid, "The Magic of Disney Animation", car stunt show, Fantasmic!!!, and city of lights
Overall: This is by far my favorite. The movie making shows were amazing and Fantasmic just blew everything away. I like how most things were shows instead of rides. Even though you basically wait the same amount of time if you get there early, it isn't as bad because you get seated.

On this trip, I became the main photographer. I took about 80% of the pictures. This made me realize a few things:
1) My camera sucks... and my dad's camera is good
2) I learned why my pictures come out fuzzy all the time
3) I have a photo fetish for flowers and lamps o.o

It's been a fun trip.

I've indexed PV's for a few artists and will continue to do so. Check it out. The next big project is to redo all the photos... sigh. I left a bunch of the original images at college, so it won't be completed for a while. I have new photos to add too.

Break
I've obviously been working on W-A.net this break, although there are a few highlights.
1) Bubble Tea -- I've been making a bunch of bubble tea and currently my favorite recipe includes:

1/4 cup of tapioca pearls (cooked 5 minutes in boiling water)
1/2 cup of water used to boil the tapioca pearls
1/2 cup of milk
2 teaspoons of Nestea unsweetened iced tea mix
sugar

2) Sushi -- ate a HUGE platter of sushi over two days

3) Monkey Island 3 -- This game is awsome, but it's really tricky. We had to look at the walkthrough or it would have taken too long. I strongly recommend it for people who like RPG's... personally I don't really like video games in general and don't have enough patience -_____-;;

4) FSM Making -- A friend and I made His Noodly Appendages! I'm planning to make a gallery of them doing different things. Here's a sample:
